Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Christmas, by Joy Cowley, illustrated by Elizabeth Fuller
Since it is near Christmas time, I thought I’d share a favorite Christmas book. In Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Christmas, the farm animals stage a mini revolt against the thought of a cold bath while Mrs. Wishy-Washy goes into town.
My parents gave this book to my older daughter for her first Christmas, and it has been a favorite with both kids. The kids liked the ridiculousness of the farm animals coming in for a bath, and also the “fair” ending where Mrs. Wishy-Washy promises them warm baths in the future.
The rhymes are really good, and there is just enough repetition to delight little kids without making adults want to scream. It is the sort of book that makes the rhyming and repetition type of picture book look easy.
