Kiss! Kiss! Yuck! Yuck! by Kyle Mewburn, illustrated by Ali Teo and John O’Reilly
This is a thoroughly charming picture book about a little boy who thinks he doesn’t like his Auntie’s kisses… until one week, she misses her usual visit. It was a gift from New Zealand, from a Kiwi author whose books we almost always enjoy. (If you ever get a chance to get your hands on his book about death Old Hu-Hu, jump at it. It is great, and opened up some really interesting conversations with our kids.)
Kiss! Kiss! Yuck! Yuck! is much more light-hearted, but still served as a prompt for really useful conversations about autonomy and the difference between playful things like what goes on between Andy and Auntie Elsie and someone forcing kisses on you when you don’t really want them at all. Granted, I initiated that conversation, but the book helped provide the framework.
And the illustrations are really fun and interesting, which is always nice when you end up reading the book over and over and over….
