Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match / Marisol McDonald No Combina

Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match / Marisol McDonald No Combina, by Monica Brown, illustrated by Sara Palacios Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match book cover

This is the first book my younger daughter brought home from her school library that she was excited about. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that unlike most of the books in her school library, it had English in it. She attends a Spanish immersion school, and most of the books in the library are therefore in Spanish. She is used to that now, but in the early days of Kindergarten, she liked to find bilingual books instead of purely Spanish ones.

However, I don’t think that was all of the appeal. This is a charming story, about a little girl whose physical characteristics “don’t match” – she has brown skin and red hair, for instance – and all the other ways she “doesn’t match.” Marisol is a wonderful character, and the illustrations are delightful. I was excited about this book, too, when we read it together!
